This is the second part of my conversation with Dr Miguel Toribio-Mateas. You can find the first part of it here, where we spent much of our time listening to his journey with food and nutrition, both personally and then how he trained in the field of first nutritional science and then on to neuroscience.
The first episode with Dr Miguel has been really popular. Perhaps because he is fairly well known and also because he is such a lovely guy.
In this second part we discuss:
- What the microbiome is
- How our gut bacteria communicate with the brain via the Vagus Nerve
- The intersection of Gut health and Mental health
- Some of the research he has done
- A few simple and accessible ways you can nourish your own gut microbes
- How stress can impact the gut microbiome
Dr Miguel Toribio-Mateas, known affectionately as "The Creative Scientist," is a distinguished clinical neuroscientist and nutrition researcher in the UK. His expertise centres on the intricate gut-brain connection, drawing on a rich, real-world scientific foundation rather than purely academic pursuits. Dr. Miguel's academic journey includes degrees in Nutritional Medicine and Clinical Neuroscience, culminating in a Doctorate focused on Mental Health and the Gut Microbiome. His doctoral studies coincided with a five-year Research Innovation Fellowship funded by the European Regional Development Fund, where he explored the profound effects of gut health on mood, cognition, and overall wellbeing. Today, he continues this important work as a Research Fellow at Cardiff University's School of Psychology.
